Everything the spring does passes through the drums and the bearings.

On a torsion spring door, a steel shaft runs across the wall above the opening. The spring sits on it, and at each end of the shaft is a cable drum, which is a grooved aluminum or steel spool that winds the lift cable. The shaft itself is carried by bearings: an end bearing plate on each side and, on most doors, a center bearing next to the spring anchor. Those few parts are the entire drive train between the spring and the door.

Bearings are what usually go first, and they announce it. A dry or worn bearing squeals, chirps once per revolution, or makes a low grinding noise that plainly comes from up at the shaft rather than from the rollers in the track. That's the useful distinction when you're trying to work out what is noisy: roller noise travels with the door, bearing noise stays up at the header. If you can get the door open safely, look for shaft wobble as it turns. A shaft that visibly moves in its plate has a bearing that's finished.

Ignoring it has a specific consequence. Once the bearing race has worn out, the shaft starts turning against the bearing plate itself, and steel on steel cuts a groove into both. Left long enough it will score the shaft, and a scored shaft is a much bigger repair than a bearing. This is the classic example of a small part that gets expensive purely by being left.

Drums fail differently. They are sized to the door height and grooved so the cable winds in a single even layer, and they're held to the shaft by set screws. When a set screw loosens, the drum slips on the shaft, that side stops taking up cable at the right rate, and the door starts rising unevenly. You see it as one side leading the other, or a door that ends up crooked in the opening. A drum can also crack at the flange, or wear its grooves until the cable crosses over itself and abrades, which is one of the reasons a cable frays in the same spot every time.

Both parts are replaced with the spring tension released and controlled, which is what makes this a service call rather than a weekend project. Drums are replaced in pairs and re-set so both cables take up exactly the same length, because a difference of a turn between the two sides is enough to run the door out of square and put it back off the track.

  • What does a bad garage door bearing sound like?

    A squeal or a rhythmic chirp once per turn of the shaft, or a low grinding, and the giveaway is that it comes from up at the header rather than following the door. Roller noise travels with the door as it moves. Bearing noise stays put.

  • Why is one side of my door higher than the other?

    Usually a drum that has slipped on the shaft because a set screw worked loose, so that side is no longer taking up cable at the same rate. It can also be uneven drum setting after a previous cable repair. Either way it needs both drums reset together, not one adjusted.

  • Can I just add grease to a noisy bearing?

    Lubricating a dry bearing can quiet it down and is part of a normal tune-up. It won't save a bearing whose race has already worn out, and that one will keep getting worse and eventually start cutting into the bearing plate. Grease buys time on a good bearing, not on a failed one.

  • Do the drums need replacing when the cables are replaced?

    Not always, but they get inspected every time, because a drum with worn grooves, a cracked flange or a loose set screw is often what destroyed the cable in the first place. Putting a new cable onto the drum that frayed the last one isn't a repair.
