Off track means the rollers left the rails that hold the door up.
A sectional garage door isn't attached to the building. It hangs from rollers that ride inside steel tracks, and the tracks are what stop it from falling into the opening. When one or more rollers come out of the track, the section they belong to loses its support. The door tilts, jams against the frame, and the weight transfers somewhere it was never meant to go, usually a hinge or a cable.
There are four common causes and each one changes the repair. A vehicle bumped the door, which is the most obvious and usually bends the track as well. A lift cable broke or came off its drum, so one side of the door dropped while the other kept going and the door racked out of square. The rollers are worn or seized, so instead of rolling through the curve they skid and eventually climb out. Or a track bracket worked loose, the track drifted away from the door, and the roller simply ran out of rail.
There's also the one nobody admits to on the phone: the manual slide lock on the side of the door was engaged and the opener tried to lift anyway. That pulls the top section forward while the bottom stays bolted to the frame and takes the door off track in one go.
Don't run the opener. Every press drags the door further out of line, bends more track, and can pull the second cable off its drum. If both cables come off, the only thing holding the door up is the track it has already left. Don't try to force it back in by hand either. The springs are still fully loaded, and a door that suddenly frees itself moves with all of that energy behind it.
The repair is methodical rather than dramatic. The door gets supported and the spring tension controlled first. Then the sections are lifted back into the track, the cables are reseated on the drums evenly so both sides carry the same load, bent track and damaged hinges and rollers get straightened or replaced, brackets are retightened, and the door gets rebalanced and tested by hand before the opener is reconnected.

What an off-track door looks like
- The door is crooked in the opening, higher on one side than the other

Can I put the door back on the track myself?
Please don't. The springs are still under full tension while the door is stuck, and a door that frees itself suddenly moves with all of that force behind it. The bottom brackets in particular carry the full spring load. This is the repair where the injuries happen.
My door came off track after the cable broke. Is that related?
Directly. The cables are what hold each side of the door up as it travels. When one breaks, that side drops while the other side keeps its position, the door racks out of square, and the rollers pop out. The cable is the cause and the derailment is the symptom, so both get fixed.
Is the track ruined?
Often not. Track that's bent at the curve or dented where a roller climbed out can sometimes be straightened, and a single damaged section can be replaced without replacing the whole assembly. Clark will tell you which case yours is once he has seen it.
The door is stuck open and my car is inside. What now?
Call 801-450-5543 and say the door is stuck open, because that changes how the job is scheduled. In the meantime leave the opener alone and don't pull the release cord, since a door stuck open with a broken cable or spring has nothing holding it up if it's disconnected.
