The measurements come before the catalog.

Five numbers decide what can go in your opening, and they get taken first. The width and height of the finished opening. Sideroom, meaning the flat wall beside the opening on each side, which is where the vertical track and the spring hardware live. Headroom, the space between the top of the opening and the ceiling, which is where the torsion shaft and the curve of the track go. And backroom, the depth from the opening into the garage, which needs to be a little more than the door height so the horizontal track has somewhere to go.

Standard lift, the ordinary setup, wants around twelve inches of headroom. Plenty of Utah garages don't have it, especially where the ceiling is low or a beam runs across the opening. That's not the end of the job, it just changes the hardware: low headroom track kits exist for exactly this. Going the other way, a garage with a tall ceiling can take high lift track, which carries the door further up the wall before it turns, and that's what makes room for a car lift or overhead storage.

Door construction is the choice that affects daily life most. A single layer steel door is a sheet of steel and nothing else: the cheapest, the lightest, the loudest and the coldest. A two layer door adds polystyrene board behind the steel. A three layer door sandwiches polyurethane foam between two steel skins, and that's the quietest, the most rigid and the best insulated of the three. Steel gauge matters too, and a lower gauge number means thicker steel and better dent resistance. If your garage is attached, or there's a room above it, or you use it as a workshop, the insulated construction pays for itself in comfort and noise.

New door, new springs. That's not an upsell, it's arithmetic. The springs counterbalance a specific door weight, and an insulated three layer door can weigh substantially more than the single layer door it replaces. The old springs were sized for the old weight. They get replaced with springs matched to the new door, and this is also the moment to decide on cycle rating, because a higher cycle spring costs a little more up front and lasts considerably longer on a door that runs several times a day.

The install itself is straightforward when the prep is right. The old door and track come out and get hauled away. The new sections go in one at a time from the bottom, with the track set plumb and parallel and the spacing consistent so the rollers run without binding. The spring is wound to the door, the door is balanced by hand, and only then does the opener get connected and its limits and force set. The last step is the safety reversal test, which is where a proper install separates itself from a fast one.
