Two small eyes near the floor decide whether the door may close.

Every opener made since the start of 1993 has to have a reversing safety system, and in practice that means a pair of photo eyes mounted no more than six inches off the floor on each side of the opening. One sends an invisible infrared beam across the doorway and the other receives it. Break that beam while the door is closing and the opener must stop and reverse. If the receiver can't see the sender at all, most openers refuse to close under power and blink their light at you to say so.

The status lights are the diagnosis and they take thirty seconds to read. Both sensors normally show a steady LED. A steady light on both usually means the pair is aligned and talking. A light that's off, or one that flickers or blinks, is telling you which side has the problem. As a rule the sending unit's light stays on whenever it has power, and the receiving unit's light goes out or blinks when the beam is interrupted, so a dark receiver with a lit sender points at alignment or at something in the path.

The causes run in a predictable order. Misalignment first, because the brackets are at ankle height where a bike, a trash can, a snow shovel or a foot knocks them out of aim, and it takes very little movement to break the line. Dirt second: cobwebs, dust film and salt spray on a lens block an infrared beam you can't see. Sunlight third, and it catches people out because it's seasonal. Low direct sun shining into the receiving lens swamps it, which is why a door that only misbehaves in the late afternoon in winter usually has nothing wrong with it at all.

Then there's the wiring, which is where the real repairs live. Sensor wire is thin low voltage cable, usually stapled along the wall, and a staple driven too hard cuts into it. Corrosion gets into the terminal screws in a damp garage, a splice made with a twist and some tape works loose, and rodents chew the insulation. A break or a short in that wire reads exactly like a blocked beam, so the sensor gets blamed and replaced and the fault comes straight back.

Sometimes the sensors are fine and the door still reverses. At that point the suspects are the opener's down force setting, the travel limit set too far so the door pushes into the floor and reads it as an obstruction, or a genuine mechanical obstruction such as a seized roller or a binding track making the door harder to move than the opener expects. That's why the whole door gets checked rather than just the two sensors.

One thing that never happens on this call: bypassing the safety system. Taping the eyes together or jumping the terminals will make the door close, and it removes the only thing standing between a closing door and a child or a pet in the opening. If the sensors are faulty, they get repaired or replaced.

  • Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?

    The opener thinks something is in the way. Nine times out of ten that's the photo eyes: knocked out of alignment, a dirty lens, or sun shining into the receiver. If the eyes check out, the next suspects are the down force setting, a travel limit set too low, or a roller binding in the track.

  • The opener light is blinking and the door won't close. What does that mean?

    That blink is the opener telling you the safety circuit is broken. It won't close under power until it can see a complete beam. Check that both sensor lights are on and steady, that nothing is sitting in the path, and that neither bracket has been bumped.

  • Can I just disconnect the sensors?

    No, and it won't be done for you either. They are the reversing safety system required on every opener made since 1993, and they're what stops a closing door on a child, a pet or a bumper. A faulty sensor gets fixed or replaced.

  • My door only does this in the afternoon. Why?

    Almost certainly low direct sunlight hitting the receiving eye and drowning out the infrared beam. It's seasonal and time of day specific, which is the giveaway. Shielding or repositioning the receiver solves it, and nothing needs replacing.
