Hinges are numbered, and the number isn't decorative.
Look at the hinges on your door and you'll see a stamped number, usually one through four. That number sets how far the roller stem is offset from the door face. As the door climbs through the curve into the horizontal track, each section has to sit slightly further from the track than the one below it, and the graduated hinge numbers are what produce that. Put a number two where a number three belongs and the door binds at the curve every single cycle, which is why hinges are replaced like for like and not with whatever is in the parts bin.
There are two kinds on a door. Intermediate hinges sit in the middle of the joint between two sections and carry no roller. End hinges sit at the outside edge of each joint, carry the roller stem, and take the most load, which is why they're the ones that usually crack.
The failure has a sound. A door with a cracking hinge bangs or pops as it passes through the curve, because the joint flexes further than it should and then snaps back. Look for a visible crack radiating from the roller stem hole or from a screw hole, a hinge that has bent open, screw holes in the section stile that have wallowed out so the fastener spins, or a gap opening between two sections when the door is partway up.
Hinges rarely fail on their own. Something has been putting sideways load into them, and it's almost always one of three things: a roller that binds instead of rolling, track that's out of alignment, or a door that has been running out of balance so every cycle is heavier than it should be. Replacing the hinge and leaving the cause alone means doing it again, so the rollers, track and balance get looked at in the same visit.
The reason to fix this early is what happens if you don't. The hinge screws pull out of the section stile, and once the stile is torn the hinge has nothing to hold onto. At that point you're no longer replacing a small piece of steel, you're looking at a damaged section. On an end hinge, the roller comes with it, and the door goes off track.

Why does my door bang as it goes up?
Most often a cracked or bent end hinge letting the joint flex through the curve, or a roller binding at the same point. Both happen exactly where the track turns from vertical to horizontal, which is why the noise always comes at the same spot in the travel.
What do the numbers on the hinges mean?
They set the offset of the roller stem, which is different for each section so the door can follow the curve of the track. Number one sits lowest, and the number climbs as you go up the door. A hinge replaced with the wrong number will make the door bind even if it bolts on perfectly.
Can I replace a hinge myself?
The intermediate hinges in the middle of a joint are ordinary hardware on a closed, unplugged door. End hinges carry the roller and the section load, and the bottom brackets are under full spring tension and aren't a homeowner job at all. If a hinge is cracked, something caused it, and that part is worth having looked at.
The screw holes are stripped. Can that be fixed?
