An opener is a small motor and a trolley. It's not a hoist. The springs carry the weight of the door and the opener only moves a door that's already balanced. So when the door stops working, the opener is what you're standing next to and pressing the button on, but the fault is often somewhere else on the door: a broken spring, a frayed cable, a roller binding in the curve, or a track knocked out of line. That's why this call starts with a look at the whole door and not with a sales pitch for a new unit.
When it genuinely is the opener, the symptom usually names the part. A motor that hums but doesn't move the door is normally a stripped nylon drive gear or a sheared trolley, both of which are ordinary wear parts. A single click and nothing is more often electrical, on the capacitor or the logic board. A door that starts down and reverses points at the safety sensors or at the down force setting. A door that stops a few inches short at either end is a travel limit that has drifted.
Remote problems have their own short list. If the wall button works and the remote doesn't, the fault is in the remote, its battery, or the receiver, not the motor. If every remote in the house went unreliable at once, look at what changed near the ceiling. Some LED and fluorescent bulbs put out radio interference right at the frequency the opener listens on, and swapping the bulb fixes a fault that looks electronic.
Noise is its own complaint and it's worth diagnosing rather than living with. A rattle that gets worse over months is usually loose hardware and dry rollers, not the motor. A rhythmic grinding from the rail is the chain and sprocket. A bang as the door passes the curve is hinges or rollers. A chain drive opener is always going to be louder than a belt drive, but a chain drive that got noticeably louder this year has something wrong with it.

- A unit that's decades old, out of production and short on parts sometimes can't be repaired. You get told that plainly, including when the honest answer is that repair isn't the right call

The motor runs but the door doesn't move. What is that?
Usually one of two things. Either the plastic drive gear inside the motor head has stripped, which is a common wear part, or the trolley that connects the rail to the door arm has sheared. Both are repairs. Check first whether someone pulled the red emergency release cord, because a disconnected trolley does exactly the same thing and costs nothing to fix.
Why does my door go down and then come straight back up?
The opener is being told something is in the way. Start with the two safety sensors near the floor, since a bumped bracket, a dusty lens or direct sun into the receiver all read as a blocked beam. If the sensors are aligned and clean, the next suspects are the down force setting and a genuine mechanical obstruction such as a seized roller catching in the track.
Should I repair this opener or replace it?
It depends on what failed and what is still available for that model. A gear, a capacitor, a board, a trolley or a sensor pair are all repairs worth doing. An old unit with no parts left in production is a different conversation. Clark will tell you which one you've, and he doesn't push replacement on a unit that has life left in it.
My remotes stopped working but the wall button is fine. Why?
That points at the radio side rather than the motor. Try a fresh battery first, then reprogram the remote using the learn button on the motor head. If every remote went bad at once, look at any LED or fluorescent bulb added recently near the opener, because some of them broadcast interference that swamps the receiver.
