A one piece door is not a sectional.
Start with what a one piece door actually is, because the name covers several of them. A one piece door, sometimes called a tilt up or a canopy door, is a single rigid slab. It pivots on hardware bolted to the jambs and swings outward at the bottom as the top goes up and back. There are no sections, no hinges between panels, and often no track running back into the garage at all. Its springs mount to that jamb hardware rather than to a shaft above the opening.
A sectional door needs several things a tilt up garage never had. Horizontal track running back into the garage, hung from the ceiling framing. Backroom, meaning enough depth behind the opening for that track and for the door riding on it, a little more than the height of the door. Headroom above the opening for the torsion shaft and for the curve where the track turns. And a header solid enough to carry the bearing plates and the spring anchor, because on a tilt up the spring load went into the jambs instead. None of that's exotic. All of it has to be there or be made to be there.
The ceiling is the part nobody thinks about until it's a problem. Horizontal track hangs from straps or angle iron fixed into joists. In a garage built before 1980, what is above that ceiling isn't always what you would hope, and a strap screwed into drywall rather than framing gives you a track that sags from the first week. Finding the framing and fixing to it properly isn't a detail of a conversion. On this job it's most of the work.
What you get for it's worth stating plainly. A sectional door doesn't swing outward, so a car can sit closer to it. It seals around the whole perimeter in a way a tilt up can't, which matters on a Provo garage that has been letting weather in for decades. It can be insulated, which a one piece slab generally can't. And it puts the door onto a spring and track system that parts are still made for, which is the practical argument: a tilt up still in service is a door you can't always buy pieces for.
Sometimes the answer is no, and that's a measurement rather than an opinion. Some Provo garages don't have the backroom or the headroom for a standard sectional install. Low headroom track kits solve a great deal of that and they are ordinary here rather than a special order. Where the depth behind the opening is the constraint there's less to work with. My Provo garage has a single slab door that swings out. What is involved in replacing it?
More than a straight swap. A sectional door brings horizontal track that has to hang from the ceiling framing, a torsion shaft and bearing plates mounted to the header, and enough depth behind the opening for the door to travel back into the garage. The existing jamb pivot hardware comes out. It's a normal job in this city and it's not a like for like replacement anywhere.
Can my old one piece door just be repaired instead?
Often, if the parts exist. One piece doors use hardware specific to their design and some of it hasn't been made in a long time. Where a spring, a pivot or a lift arm can still be sourced, repairing is the simpler route and it's the first thing checked. Where it can't, a conversion becomes the option by default rather than by preference.
How much room behind the door does a sectional need?
A little more than the height of the door, so the horizontal track and the door riding on it have somewhere to go, plus room above the opening for the shaft and the curve. Standard lift wants roughly a foot up there and low headroom hardware handles less. It all gets measured first, because depth a garage doesn't have can't be given to it.
Will a new door fit an opening that's not square?
Usually, within reason, and older Provo openings frequently aren't square. Track is set plumb and parallel to itself rather than to the frame, and the perimeter seal absorbs small differences. An opening that's badly out of square or that has moved is a framing conversation first, and that gets raised before a door is ordered against it.
