Why the door reverses, on either vintage.
Take that reversal as the worked example. On a post 2000 opener the first suspects are the two photo eyes near the floor: knocked out of aim, a dirty lens, or low sun shining into the receiver. On an opener built before the first day of 1993 there are no photo eyes to misalign. If that door reverses, the cause is the down force setting, a travel limit set too far so the door pushes into the floor, or something physically resisting the door. The symptom is identical and the order you work through it's reversed.
The blinking light is the second example. A modern opener that can't see a complete beam refuses to close under power and blinks its light to say so. That is a safety lockout and it doubles as a diagnostic. An older American Fork unit with no external sensors has no such lockout, so a door with a genuine obstruction problem will keep trying rather than stopping and reporting. The absence of a warning isn't the absence of a fault.
The two dividing lines are the first day of 1991, when openers had to sense resistance and reverse on their own, and the first day of 1993, when the external photo eyes became a required second layer. Nearly half of American Fork housing was built long after both. About a third was built well before them, and while most of those garages are on a later motor by now, some aren't. My door reverses before it closes and I can't find any sensors. What does that mean?
Most likely that your opener predates the external sensor requirement, which applies to units made from the first day of 1993 onward. With no eyes near the floor, nothing is watching the doorway and the reversal is coming from somewhere else: the down force setting, a travel limit set too far, or a roller binding in the track. Those get checked in that order.
My opener is from the nineties. Does it have both safety layers?
Probably, and it's worth confirming rather than assuming. Anything manufactured from the first day of 1993 onward had to have the inherent reversal and the external photo eyes. Units from 1991 and 1992 had the reversal but weren't yet required to carry the eyes, and some of them have no terminals to wire eyes to. The label and the back of the motor head answer it.
Can an older opener be brought up to current safety standards?
Sometimes, and it depends on what is on the board. Where there are terminals for external sensors, a retrofit pair can usually go on and be aligned properly. Where there aren't, no accessory adds them, and the inherent reversal can't be added to a motor that wasn't built with it. That's the point at which a new unit is the honest recommendation rather than a sale.
The opener sounds fine but the door is heavy and slow. Which one do I fix?
The door, and then see whether the opener still has a complaint. An opener only moves a door the springs have already balanced, so a door that has gone heavy makes a healthy motor sound like a failing one. That's more common on the older half of American Fork, where the door has had decades to drift out of balance.
