Newer openers fail at the board, not the gears.
That's an inversion of the older cities. In Provo or Orem the mechanics wear out while the electronics are simple enough to keep alive indefinitely. Lehi is the other way round. A mid 2000s opener has a logic board, a DC motor, soft start and soft stop, travel set electronically instead of by a screw, and a receiver paired to rolling code remotes. All of that works well, and none of it's repairable in the way a nylon gear is repairable. When a board goes, the repair is a board.
Boards also go out of production faster than gears do. A drive gear that fits a chain drive from 2005 still fits one today. The board that ran the same unit may have been superseded twice and discontinued. It depends entirely on whether that board is still made for the model. Mechanically a unit of that age is often fine, so a replacement board puts a sound opener back in service and is the right call. Where the board has been discontinued with no equivalent, the answer is a new unit even though nothing is worn out. That's a frustrating answer rather than a sales pitch.
What normally fails first on a mid 2000s opener?
